I want to make my home more secure

You may want to make your home more secure to keep an abuser out.

To make security improvements worthwhile, the abuser should no longer be living with you or have keys to your home.

Sanctuary schemes

Your local council may run a sanctuary scheme, which aims to give people at risk of domestic violence the option to remain in their homes by improving safety and security.

The measures could include:

  • reinforced doors
  • extra locks
  • spy holes
  • security lighting
  • intercoms and video systems
  • safe rooms (also called sanctuary or panic rooms) where you can wait in safety until help comes
