Assuming you haven’t deliberately abducted your child, there are several reasons you might have been accused of child abduction:
- you were fleeing domestic abuse
- you didn’t know you needed to get permission from the other parent
- you thought the other parent had agreed or would have agreed
- you tried as hard as possible to ask the other parent but couldn’t get in touch with them
- you asked the other parent but they unreasonably refused to give consent
It’s important that you contact a solicitor as soon as possible, because they’ll be able to give you the best advice for your situation.
You should explain to the court why the accusation is wrong. Don’t ignore court documents and do try to attend any hearings that are taking place.
If you’re now in the UK, you may be able to get legal aid.
